Whenever I’m in the toy store with my son, he’ll be pulling me to his favourite corner. And some of the toys he likes are just not suitable for his age group. I often have to explain to him why they aren’t suitable and why he should just stick to what is good for his age.

Whatever games or toys you allow your kids, always keep watch over their development and it may not be good that they grow up too fast.

We had a simple and meaningful Mother’s day celebration when my son came up to me with a handmade craft he did from school. The dinner was nice at our favourite ribs place and though DH didn’t buy me any gift, he was nice enough to buy me my favourite meal.

In the afternoon, we gathered all our family photos together and did some slideshows for our family archive. It was quality time well spent on a lazy afternoon and I took a nap to refresh and rejuvenate my tired body. Looking back, I’ve been a mom for almost six years and amidst all the toils and pains, I have grown so much as a person.

A simple celebration like this gave me the motivation to move forward and appreciate my calling as a mom. It also reminds me of what my mom had gone through for me all these years. Mother’s day is a time to reminisce and give thanks for all the blessings bestowed upon my life and I’m forever thankful.

My boy is coming six and at this age, he’s always on the move with little tolerance for boredom. It gets difficult and challenging when I take him to the shops as he’s always finding things to do. Sometimes his curiosity can be embarassing too.

He is especially intrigued by the Symbol LS2208 barcode scanner and whenever we go grocery shopping, he will find things to scan and I guess this looks like a toy to him! The shop keepers have been kind to stop this curious child though not many will be so understanding. Sometimes I get annoyed with him but there’s really no point reprimanding a child who is just exploring when he’s awake.

This exploration will continue as he grow into his teenage years and by then, I may miss his explorations.

With the advancement of technology, even parenting styles have to change according to times. At five year old, children are given computer lessons in school and their learning curves are more advanced than we are when we were kids.

I could recall a kid asking his mom for a Wii or XBox for his birthday present. It’s amazing that these kids are so adept in these things. I have no idea even how to operate any of these high tech games!

Personally, I believe that we as parents need to create boundaries for our children when it comes to the online media. We can’t stop the advancement of technology but we can guide our children in the process. Stiffling them may not be a good idea but letting them go loose with no boundaries is not wise either. So parents, be an active one and watch what your kids are learning.

We are invited to a baby announcement party this weekend. Apart from the fun of meeting friends and getting to know new faces, I am excited to see the new baby. Our friends have been longing for a child for years and we are so happy for them that their dreams have come true.

I’ve been thinking hard for a good baby gift for the couple. The internet is a great place to find, search and compare baby gift ideas and after some research at ShopWiki, I manage to get a stroller for the baby gift. From ShopWiki, I learned about the different types of strollers – umbrella lightweight ones, travel systems and those with full features. Since our friends travel alot for their business, the umbrellla stroller would be a good choice for them. I like the Combi strollers for their lightweight feature and portability. Besides, they are affordable, comfortable and contain lots of features that promise comfort and safety for the baby and parents.

Children are active. Many children participate in a number of different after school activities, including sports. Unfortunately, when school ends, there are many children that do not know what to do. If you are the parent of a school aged child, who is currently on summer vacation, you may want to encourage them to go outdoors and play. In fact, many children don’t think about it, but there are literally an unlimited number of benefits to being outside.

Regardless of your child’s age, it is important to get outside. Whether they enjoy relaxing by the pool or playing sports or just hanging around on the Outer Banks, they can benefit from the great outdoors. To enjoy the outdoors, you and your child don’t even have to leave your backyard. With a wide variety of different outdoor activities available, it is likely that they will never have a dull moment.

On my way back from town yesterday, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I spotted a new store that sells only organic and bamboo mattress. I thought that was a cool place to shop for eco bedding and mattress, especially for the family who promote green living and an eco lifestyle. Due to my nose allergies, I am careful to choose only latex mattress when we moved into our new place. At that time, there wasn’t any organic mattress or bedding like now so it looks like it’s time to update my bedroom and make a change. Coming down to mattresses, there are so many types these days with many high end ones targeting those who have back and health problems. If possible, choose organic mattress for your little ones or newborn such as this award winning Naturepedic No-Compromise Organic Cotton Classic 150 which combines natural, non-toxic, and healthy materials for a safe and comfortable sleep environment. There is also no pesticide or boric acid treated cotton. For a hypoallergenic design, latex, coir/latex and wool are not used. Winner of the Parenting Media Awards and recommended by Healthy Child Healthy World, Naturepedic No-Compromise baby crib mattresses are simply the healthiest crib mattresses available. Standard crib size (28? x 52? x 6?). Also fits toddler bed. Made in U.S.A.

Baby wipes is one important must-have item, a ‘saver’ during those toilet-training days too. They are great pick me ups when you are traveling especially if you can find a washroom to clean your hands! When we are traveling, I tend to throw in a pack or two for convenience. All moms use them when their children are little and ask any of them and they can tell you that how dependent they are on them after a few years!

Today is one of those days I felt a little depressed. Something happened this morning and I got so upset with my son that after disciplining him, I felt terrible. I was angry and mad so I lashed out on him, only to realize that he was still a young child. Sometimes I felt like a lousy parent. I let my temper got the better of me and I lost my cool on him. I frightened him and made him kinda sad. Later on, I apologized to him and we both made up. With God’s help, I don’t want to ever behave this way again towards my child. Never.

Hobbies also benefit children in many ways. It gives a child an opportunity to express themselves, and it allows them to discover themselves and build self-esteem. They are also great educational tools. A child interested in rock collecting learns about geology and science, and a child in writing stories learns about sentence structure and proper grammar. Hobbies teach children to set and achieve goals, solve problems and make decisions. They can also set the course for what your child becomes later in life as they often turn into lifelong interests or careers.
